This terraced garden in Bromham was built for clients who wanted real wow factor: contemporary with a touch of industrial edge, current yet timeless. Three upper levels step gently down to the lawn, with structural walls forming the framework and dividing hard paving from soft planting and trees. Floating cedar benches soften the hard lines of the walls, creating comfortable seating dressed in pastel cushions and throws that echo the planting palette. Schellevis concrete planks bring the industrial feel the clients were after, with larger units forming two broad steps down to the lawn, and dark blue grey clay setts cladding the walls as the perfect finishing detail. The planting scheme, designed by Daniel Shea, layers vibrant purple thyme and bold yellow iris for a look that's both dynamic and structured. Years on, the planting has matured beautifully, spilling over the hard edges and softening the whole space. The project won Best in Category for Hard Landscaping and GOLD (project value £65k-£80k) at the APL 2024 Awards, designed in collaboration with garden designers Pen & Barrow.
